□ sure と certain「確信して」「きっと～する」
※ この記事は、高校生向けで、1⃣ のみ中学生向けの内容になります。
※ いろいろなパターンと、誰がそう思っているかの違いがあるので、整理して覚えたいです。
▢ sure [ʃúər][形容詞]「確信して, 自信があって」
▢ certain [səːrtn][形容詞]「確信して, 確かな」
※ certain には「いくらかの, ある程度の, 若干の, 多少の」などの意味もあります。
1⃣ sure / certain + that 節 [中学]
※ that 節とは that の後ろに[主語]+[動詞]と続くことを表しています。
※ that 節の前の [主語] が確信する「人」で、that 節 が確認する「ことがら」です。
※ that は省略することができます… 省略されている場合、わかりづらくなるので注意が必要。
※ 中学の教科書 Here We Go! では、この 1⃣ のみ登場します (certain は登場しません)。
・I’m sure [that] you like playing basketball now. 2⃣ U-02 … コチラ
私は、あなたが今はバスケットボールをするのが好きだと確信しています
・I’m sure [that] you’ll like it.
きっと気に入ってもらえると思います
・I am sure [that] it is true.
確かにそれは本当だ
・I am certain
that… / I feel certain
that…
…は確かだと思う
・I am certain [that] I saw it.
確かにそれを見た
・He felt certain
that she would succeed.
彼女は成功するだろうと彼は確信した
2⃣ sure / certain + of ＋ [動名詞] [高校]
※ [動名詞] は [動詞] の -ing形 … 詳しい説明・復習は ⇒ コチラ
※ [動名詞] の代わりに [名詞句] を」使うことも可能です。
※ sure / certain + [動名詞] は、主語になっている人が確信がある人です (確信をもっているのは話し手ではありません)。
・He is sure of passing his exam. = He is sure [that] he will pass his exam.
彼は試験に合格すると確信している
・I am sure of the fact.
その事実を確信している
・He is certain of getting the treasure. = He is certain
that he will get the treasure.
彼はそのお宝を手に入れられると確信している
・I was certain of being elected as chairman. =I was certain [that] I would be elected …
私は議長に選ばれるものと確信していた
・I am not certain of the fact.
その事実はよくわからない
・He is certain of victory.
彼は勝利を確信している
・He is certain of her recovery. =He is certain [that] she will recover.
彼女がきっと回復するものと彼は信じている
3⃣ sure / certain + to ＋ [動詞の原形] [高校]
※ to ＋ [動詞の原形] は [不定詞] と呼ばれています … 詳しい説明・復習は ⇒ コチラ
※ sure / certain + [不定詞] は、確信をもっているのは話し手 です。
・He is sure to come. = I am sure [that] he will come.
彼はきっと来る (話し手が「彼はきっと来る」と思っている)
・You are sure to win. = I am sure [that] you will win.
君は必ず勝つ
・Speak of the devil, and he is sure to appear.
[諺(ことわざ)] うわさをすれば影がさす
※ [命令形], and …「～しなさい、そうすれば…」という形をしています。
・He is certain to be there. = I am certain [that] he is [or will be] there.]
彼は必ずそこにいる / 彼は必ずそこに来る
・He is certain to pay in cash. ＝ It is certain [that] he will pay in cash.
彼が現金で払うのは間違いない
4⃣ it is certain + that 節 [高校]
※ it is sure that という言い方はしないと覚えましょう。
これは sure は主観的な確かさに重点が置かれ, certain は確固とした根拠を示しているためです
・It is certain that…
…は確かだ
・It is
certain [that] he tried.
彼が努力したことは明らかだ
・It is
certain [that] it happened.
そのことがあったことは確実だ
・It is
certain [that] he went there.
彼がそこへ行ったのははっきりしている
